Project# 05641

Low-latency WiFi network

AGV/Robotics Project

Client brief

Our client required the deployment of around 80 automated picking robots in their distribution centre to improve operational efficiency. These robots would operate within a specific zone in the larger warehouse. To operate smoothly and reliably, each robot would need to maintain a constant wireless connection to avoid triggering fail-safe mechanisms that would cause it to stop moving. The network would need to handle variability, with as few as one or as many as 40 robots in a particular area. While in use, each robot would require continuous high Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and guaranteed sub-2-millisecond latency.

Our Solution

Autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) typically move around on their own and do not require Wi-Fi for navigation purposes. However, they do often rely on wireless networks to communicate with each other and with their central control system. To meet the requirements of this particular solution, a high-density wireless design was necessary to minimize co-channel interference while also providing seamless roaming for high-speed moving devices. Additionally, the radio for each robot was installed within the protective enclosure of the robot and only 100cm above ground level. Highly directional antennas were used to ensure that the required number of access points could be installed without causing significant co-channel interference. Whenever possible, access points and antennas were installed as close to the physical robots as possible.
