Wireless bridge

Logistics expansion

Client brief

Our client, a logistics company, needed to quickly add extra storage capacity and acquired a nearby 400,000 sq. ft. warehouse. As the two buildings would be operated and managed as a single business unit, it made sense to extend the existing network. However, due to time constraints, a dedicated MPLS circuit was not a viable option, typically taking 90 days or more due to wayleave issues or civic involvement. Fibre wasn’t an option either because there was no route available. Therefore, we were asked to come up with a solution that guaranteed a minimum of 1Gbps full duplex connectivity between the two buildings.

Our solution

Initially, we considered a wireless bridge link between the two buildings as an option. However, upon an initial viewing of Google Maps, it seemed complicated due to the road between the two sites and other potential obstructions. Therefore, we conducted a physical site survey as the first step. The survey determined that line-of-sight between the two buildings was possible, provided that the equipment was mounted at least 20 meters above ground level, which we could achieve using masts.

Due to throughput and interference reasons, we ruled out a WiFi-based solution and instead chose a 60Ghz wireless solution from Cambium Networks. This solution could achieve speeds of 4Gbps at the required distance. This type of wireless equipment provides fibre-like performance and reliability at a fraction of the cost of running fibre or using service provider circuits, and is an option where there is line-of-sight. It can be configured to use the licensed or unlicensed spectrum.

Deliverables

  • Cambium Networks cnWave V3000 60Ghz Bridge solution
  • Cabling to mast location at either end
  • Installation of masts including working at height utilising MEWPs.
  • Project management
  • Installation, testing and commissioning

This type of equipment is also ideal for wireless backhaul applications, such as CCTV projects.
