From dashboards to agents: the future Cisco is betting on
Cisco's AgenticOps vision signals the most significant shift in IT operations in a decade. Here's what it means for businesses like yours.
For decades, managing IT infrastructure meant navigating a collection of dashboards — one for networking, another for security, more for compute and collaboration. Skilled teams became expert at moving between tools, correlating information manually, and applying judgment to complex, multi-domain problems.
Cisco's announcement at Cisco Live 2026 suggests that model is approaching the end of its useful life.
The company unveiled Cisco Cloud Control, a unified platform that brings its entire portfolio — networking, security, compute, observability, and collaboration — into a single environment. But the platform itself is not the headline. The headline is what Cisco intends to run inside it: AI agents that investigate problems, correlate data across domains, recommend fixes, and increasingly take action with limited human involvement. Cisco calls this operating model AgenticOps, and the company has staked a significant portion of its future on it.
Why the timing is right
The case for AgenticOps is not primarily about technology. It is about scale.
Modern enterprise environments generate more operational data than any human team can meaningfully process. The growth of cloud infrastructure, remote working, IoT devices, and now AI workloads has made managing a network qualitatively different from what it was a decade ago. The same dashboard-and-alert model that worked well for a contained, predictable environment struggles to keep pace with a distributed, dynamic one.
At the same time, the window between a vulnerability being discovered and being actively exploited has collapsed. Where organisations once had weeks to respond to a newly disclosed security issue, Cisco's research suggests that window can now be measured in minutes. Human-speed response cycles were never designed for that environment.
The answer Cisco is proposing is an infrastructure that can act at software speed — governed by humans, but not limited to human pace.
What AgenticOps looks like in practice
In Cisco's vision, AI agents do not replace IT teams. They change what those teams spend their time on.
Rather than manually correlating alerts across separate management consoles, an agent identifies the issue, traces it to its root cause across networking, security, and firewall domains, and presents a proposed resolution. The team approves and the agent acts. Context is preserved across shifts and escalations so that nothing is lost or repeated.
This is not a distant roadmap. Cisco's AI Canvas workspace — where operators and agents work from the same live evidence — is available now, and the platform already integrates data from more than 50 ecosystem tools, including AWS, Google, Microsoft, and ServiceNow. It is designed from the outset for the multi-vendor environments most organisations already operate.
Critically, governance and security controls for AI agents are built into the platform from day one rather than treated as an afterthought. Agents operate within policies that organisations define, and every action is auditable. This matters. The prospect of an AI agent making changes to production infrastructure raises legitimate questions, and the answer needs to be architectural — not a policy document written after the fact.
What this means for your organisation
The immediate implication is not that you need to deploy autonomous AI agents next quarter. Most organisations are not yet ready for that, and Cisco is realistic about the adoption curve.
The more immediate value lies in unified visibility. Managing complex infrastructure from a single operational surface — with real-time topology, correlated alerts, and cross-domain intelligence — delivers benefits regardless of how much agentic automation an organisation ultimately chooses to adopt. Clearer, faster insight into what is happening across your environment is valuable on its own terms.
The longer-term implication is more significant.
